Division 09 — Finishes: how to specify products in it

Gypsum board, tile, ceilings, flooring, wall coverings and paint. Division 09 is where most of a building’s surface area gets decided, and where finish-schedule errors begin.

What Division 09 covers

Interior finishes from the stud out: gypsum board assemblies and non-structural framing, plaster, tile and stone, acoustical and specialty ceilings, resilient, wood, tile and carpet flooring, wall coverings, acoustic treatment and paints and coatings.

What to check before you specify

  1. 01Flame spread and smoke development — the finish’s classification against what the code allows for that room and occupancy.
  2. 02Slip resistance — wet and dry values for flooring, measured to the standard the project references.
  3. 03Acoustic performance — NRC and CAC for ceilings, IIC and STC contributions for floor assemblies, from tested data.
  4. 04Durability and wear — abrasion, impact and moisture ratings matched to the room’s use.
  5. 05Substrate and installation requirements — moisture limits, flatness and primers that the warranty depends on.
  6. 06Sustainability data — low-emitting certifications and environmental product declarations where the project requires them.
