Division 08 — Openings: how to specify products in it
Doors, frames, hardware, windows, storefront, curtain wall, glazing and louvers. Division 08 carries more life-safety and performance criteria per section than any other finish-side division. Here is what it covers and what to check.
What Division 08 covers
Every opening in the building envelope and interior partitions: swinging, sliding and overhead doors and their frames; door hardware; windows and skylights; aluminum entrances, storefront and curtain wall; glazing; and louvers and vents. It is where fire ratings, egress hardware, air and water infiltration, thermal performance and accessibility all converge on single products.

What to check before you specify
- 01Fire rating and the listing behind it — the door, frame and hardware set must be listed together for the opening’s required rating.
- 02Egress and accessibility — panic hardware where required, opening force, clearances and closer settings per the applicable code and accessibility standard.
- 03Air, water and structural performance — test standards and values for storefront, curtain wall and windows, matched to the project’s design pressures.
- 04Thermal and solar performance — U-factor, SHGC and condensation resistance for glazing and frames, from the manufacturer’s tested data.
- 05Hardware coordination — every opening’s hardware set matched to its door type, rating, function and the keying schedule.
- 06Glazing safety — impact-safety glazing where required, with the marking standard on the data sheet.
