Division 07 — Thermal and Moisture Protection: how to specify products in it

Waterproofing, air barriers, insulation, roofing, flashing, firestopping and sealants. Division 07 is the envelope, and the division where a substitution most often goes unnoticed until it leaks.

What Division 07 covers

Everything that keeps water, air, heat and fire where they belong: below-grade and above-grade waterproofing, dampproofing, thermal insulation, weather and air barriers, exterior wall panels and siding, steep and low-slope roofing, sheet metal flashing and trim, roof accessories, firestopping and joint sealants.

Common sections

  • 07 13 26 Self-Adhering Sheet Waterproofing
  • 07 21 00 Thermal Insulation
  • 07 27 26 Fluid-Applied Membrane Air Barriers
  • 07 42 13 Metal Wall Panels
  • 07 54 23 Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) Roofing
  • 07 62 00 Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim
  • 07 84 13 Penetration Firestopping
  • 07 92 00 Joint Sealants

What to check before you specify

  1. 01System compatibility — membranes, primers, sealants and insulation specified together must be approved together by their manufacturers.
  2. 02Fire performance — insulation and wall-assembly components tested as part of the listed assembly, not in isolation.
  3. 03Thermal values — R-value or U-factor at the installed thickness and the aged value where the material drifts.
  4. 04Air and vapor performance — permeance values and the barrier’s continuity details at every transition.
  5. 05Warranty terms — what the manufacturer’s system warranty requires of adjacent products and installers.
  6. 06Firestopping listings — each penetration and joint condition matched to a tested system, not a product.
