Division 04 — Masonry: how to specify products in it

Mortar, grout, anchorage, brick, concrete masonry units, stone and cast stone. Division 04 is where the unit, the mortar and the wall’s water management have to be specified as one assembly.

What Division 04 covers

Masonry units and everything that holds and protects them: mortar and grout, anchorage and reinforcing, brick and concrete unit masonry, glass unit masonry, exterior stone cladding and stone masonry, cast stone, and masonry restoration and cleaning.

What to check before you specify

  1. 01Unit grade and exposure — the brick or unit grade for the project’s weathering exposure, and the unit standard it is made to.
  2. 02Compressive strength — unit and assembly strength matching the structural design, from the manufacturer’s tested data.
  3. 03Mortar type — the mortar type suited to the unit, the exposure and the structural requirement; stronger is not better.
  4. 04Fire resistance — the rating of concrete masonry by equivalent thickness and unit type, from the listing or calculation the code accepts.
  5. 05Water management — flashing, weeps, drainage and the air-space products specified with the unit, not after it.
  6. 06Movement and appearance — control and expansion joint products, and sealers or cleaners that will not stain or trap moisture.
