Construction specification software: what it does, and where product research fits
Specification software covers several different jobs, from master guide text to submittal tracking. Knowing which job a tool does tells you where it fits in the workflow, and where it doesn’t.
What specification software does
A construction specification is a contract document, so the software around it exists to keep the text current, consistent and defensible. Some tools hold the master guide text and the office’s edits to it. Some manage the editing of individual project sections. Some link the specification to the model or the drawings. Some track the submittals the specification demands. Few of them answer the question that sits underneath Part 2 of every section: which products actually meet these criteria, and where is the proof?
The kinds of tools
- Master guide specifications — the maintained library of section text an office starts from.
- Section editors — tools for editing, formatting and assembling project sections from that library.
- Specification-to-model links — tools that tie sections and products to the elements in a building model.
- Submittal and product-data management — tools that track what the specification requires and what the contractor has submitted.
- Product research and selection — tools that find and verify the products named in Part 2, with the data behind them.
Where product research sits
Product research happens before the section is written and again every time a substitution is proposed. It is the step that decides what goes in Part 2, and it is the step most spec tools assume has already happened somewhere else. The quality of a specification is set here: a defensible product with current data, or a product carried forward from the last project without anyone checking.
Where Gaudi Pro fits
Gaudi Pro is the research step. Ask in plain language for products that meet a performance criterion and get categorized results from verified manufacturer data, with a citation on every answer and a confidence indicator on every result. It works alongside whatever tool writes and manages the specification, supplying the products and the evidence that go into Part 2. Start free
